When the pandemic hit, Americans began driving significantly less. Auto insurance companies benefited from reduced driving and fewer crashes. Because insurance companies make money by not paying for accidents and other claims, the pandemic increased their profits by tens of billions of dollars, according to the Consumer Federation of America.   Given the significant and prolonged reduction in driving and as a result, in accidents, MASSPIRG urges the Division of Insurance to ensure that auto insurance companies give drivers the appropriate premium reductions and refunds now.
