100 Groups back national ban on PFAS in food packing

Across the country, multiple fast food chains, including McDonald’s and Burger King, and nine state legislatures have enacted phase-outs of PFAS in food packaging in favor of safer alternatives, including Maryland. Now, a key U.S. Senate Committee has backed a bipartisan measure to ban PFAS in food packaging, and a national ban is within reach. That’s why 100 groups sent a letter to leadership in the House and Senate calling on them to finalize the ban.

In 2020 a study found that some paper bags, bowls commonly used for salads and trays contained the toxic chemicals. PFAS are called “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in our bodies and the environment. This makes exposure in children particularly concerning because they could be exposed to these chemicals for decades to come.
