Litigation Director

Denver, CO; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Washington, DC preferred

APPLY NOW

PIRG is currently looking for an attorney to direct our litigation program.

PIRG is an advocate for the public interest, working to win concrete results on real problems that affect millions of lives, and standing up for the public against powerful interests when they push the other way.

The problems we face don’t care if you’re a liberal or a conservative, or if you live in a red or blue state — they affect each and every one of us. That’s why, for decades, we’ve taken a non-partisan, fact-driven, results-oriented approach to our work.

PIRG is perhaps best known as an organization that uses organizing and advocacy to create social change.  The litigation program provides an additional, and often complimentary, arrow in the quiver when it comes to solving some of the biggest problems facing society.

Strategic litigation can be used in conjunction with organizing and advocacy in a multi-pronged approach to achieve results that no single tactic could achieve on its own. Because each approach compliments and amplifies the others, the power of litigation, organizing, and advocacy together is greater than the sum of its parts.

Also, for better or worse, many of the most important issues of the day are being decided in the courts. The litigation program allows PIRG to have an impact on these issues and weigh in with its own particular point of view. PIRG has long been involved in getting laws on the books that protect and advance the public interest. It is therefore important to have the capacity to enforce those laws through litigation when we believe that under-enforcement is occurring.

PIRG, as a membership based organization with members in all 50 states, can also play a uniquely important role in cases by recruiting its members to participate in litigation for the purposes of standing.

A recent example of PIRG litigation:  PIRG’s Global Warming Program is advocating for policies to speed our transition from methane (aka ‘natural’) gas to electricity.  One challenge is the fact that many Americans are unaware of the climate and public health hazards of methane gas, and the Gas industry is capitalizing on that lack of understanding by greenwashing gas as a sustainable energy source.  On August 4th, 2022, PIRG announced a first of its kind lawsuit against Washington Gas for misleading its customers on the environmental impacts of natural gas. This litigation complements PIRG’s efforts to get the CPSC to warn consumers about the health hazards of gas stoves, and to pressure Best Buy and other companies to alert consumers to these hazards.
