Today the Illinois House of Representatives passed legislation to phase out the sale of fluorescent light bulbs in the state.

Fluorescent light bulbs  are inefficient compared to LEDs and contain toxic mercury by design.

The bill still needs to clear the State Senate and be signed by the governor in order to become law.

“States ending the sale of fluorescent bulbs are cutting mercury exposure and energy waste, delivering lasting environmental and public health benefits,” said Johanna Neumann, senior director of Environment America’s Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy.
