Info Session: How State Lawmakers Can Rein in Data Brokers

Join our info session with privacy and tech sector experts to learn about data brokers and policy options for state lawmakers.
Join us on Monday, December 16th from 3-3:35 ET (12-12:35 PT). RSVP here to receive the Zoom info.
Data brokers are shadowy third party companies that collect, buy and sell people’s data online – including sensitive information like home addresses, real-time location, and health conditions. Data brokers pose immediate dangers to consumers, military members, and law enforcement, and their business practices heavily contribute to the rise in identity theft, fraud and hyper-targeted scams that all consumers face today. There are hundreds of data brokers active in the U.S. – and they’re all virtually unregulated.
Hear from experts how state lawmakers can take common sense steps to put reasonable controls on the data sales industry. We’ll cover how to protect law enforcement and other public servants from having their home addresses published online; how to boost industry transparency; and how to make it easier for consumers to take back control of their information.
Speakers:
Matt Adkisson, President of Atlas Data Privacy Corporation
Tom Kemp, Policy Advisor
Caitriona Fitzgerald, Deputy Director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center
R.J. Cross, Don’t Sell My Data campaign director at U.S. PIRG Education Fund
