Just in time for summer picnic and barbeque season: It’s important to remember a lot of food contains bacteria. That can increase to unsafe levels in food that’s left at room temperature or worse — outdoors — for long periods.

Our new report analyzed food recall data from the Food and Drug Administration and U.S. Department of Agriculture and found:

  • Recalls from Salmonella in 2022 nearly doubled from pre-pandemic.
  • More than 40% of recalls stem from undeclared allergens.
  • Recalls from Listeria, E. coli and foreign materials in food are down.

It’s important to realize Salmonella is the No. 1 cause of hospitalizations and deaths from foodborne illness in the United States. There’s actually a new Salmonella alert just announced Tuesday, involving cookie dough and illnesses in six states.
