Air travel expected to hit new record over Thanksgiving

Changes in the law this year give passengers new rights when flights are canceled or significantly delayed

Airline travel over the Thanksgiving holiday is expected to be the busiest on record, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said

For the period from the Tuesday before Thanksgiving (Nov. 26) through the following Monday (Dec. 2,) passenger volume is expected to be up 6% compared with 2023. So far this year, passenger volumes have hit new record highs, an increase of 17% compared with two years ago.

With that in mind, it’s important for travelers to:

  • Get to the airport at the recommended time, generally at least two hours before departure. If your flight is overbooked and the airline involuntarily bumps anyone, those who got through security last could be most vulnerable.
  • Be patient and nice.
  • Know that you have rights if your flight is disrupted, your luggage is late or lost, you’re bumped from the flight, etc.
  • Consider putting an AirTag or another type of tracker not only in your luggage, but also in your carry-on in case overhead bin space is full and you’re asked to check your bag after you board.
