RTD Board sends measure to voters to keep transit moving

The train is one transit option to Denver International Airport.

At their Tuesday night meeting, the Regional Transportation District (RTD) Board of Directors approved a measure for the November ballot that will ask voters if RTD, the Denver region’s main transit provider, can keep all of their core operational dollars that fund the region’s bus and train service.

Without voter approval, RTD will be required to forego some of the sales tax dollars they receive starting in 2025 due to the reintroduction of the TABOR cap. TABOR is the Taxpayer Bill of Rights and limits the amount of money a government like RTD can retain.

Voters can eliminate that TABOR cap, and last week, eighteen organization and community leaders sent a letter to the RTD board calling on them to refer a measure that allows voters to do just that.

The measure will now appear on the November ballot and will allow voters, without raising taxes, to ensure we keep transit moving and avoid cuts to the region’s bus and train service.
