Beyond Plastic

Working to reduce single-use plastics, one door at a time

This summer our outreach team is building support to move California beyond plastic packaging.

With Californians flocking to the beach and hanging around the BBQ, summer is in full swing. That also means CALPIRG canvassers are out educating the public door-to-door in neighborhoods across the state.

This summer our outreach team is building support to move California beyond plastic packaging.

Almost every time we order something online, we’re confronted with a pile of single-use plastic – plastic envelopes, bubble wrap, foam peanuts and more. Most of that plastic can’t be recycled, so it ends up littering our streets, clogging our landfills, and polluting our environment. When you multiply that by the millions of daily purchases made through online retailers like Amazon, you have an e-commerce packaging problem that generated 600 million pounds of plastic waste in 2020 alone.

That’s why we’re calling on the state legislature to pass Assembly Bill 2026 by Assemblymember Laura Friedman, which would require e-commerce retailers to reduce single-use plastic in their shipments.

To win, this summer we’re shining a spotlight on the issue in the media and online, going door-to-door to spread the word and mobilize public support, and taking our case directly to our decision-makers in Sacramento.

So when you get a knock on the door from a CALPIRG canvasser this summer, make sure to say hello and take action.
