San Diego is the newest city supporting Right to Repair
The city joins the growing list of California local governments, nonprofits and businesses in support of reducing e-waste and promoting repair.
Earlier this week, the city of San Diego submitted a letter in support of SB 244, a bill that would reduce waste and save consumers money by making electronics and appliances easier to fix.
In the letter to the bill author, a city representative noted that: “By requiring manufacturers to take responsibility for their products through their life cycle, customers can more easily identify opportunities for repair and reuse before disposal up front, promoting a circular economy.” The letter goes on to say that SB 244 would “help reduce harmful impacts in the City’s landfill and local environments.”
The CALPIRG-backed bill has received the support of over 100 local elected officials, independent repair businesses, and many others. LA County has also taken a “support” position.
In order to become law, SB 244 must still pass out of the California Assembly and be signed by the Governor by October 14th.
