Doctors from around California joined CALPIRG for a lobby day on legislation to require warning labels on gas stoves.

On August 7th and 8th, 23 medical professionals, including doctors and public health experts, joined forces with CALPIRG, Physicians for Social Responsibility, and Climate Health to call for warning labels on gas stoves. The doctors lobbied in support of AB 2513 (Pellerin), which would require gas stoves sold in California come with information on the health risks associated with gas cooking.

Over two days the medical professionals conveyed a unified message: gas stoves emit harmful pollutants like nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide, which can exacerbate respiratory issues, particularly in children. Pediatricians in our group highlighted the alarming connection between gas stoves and the worsening of asthma symptoms in their young patients, stressing the need for this legislation to protect vulnerable populations.

AB 2513 is essential for safeguarding public health by ensuring consumers are informed about these risks. Gas stoves, though common in many homes, can silently compromise indoor air quality. By mandating clear warning labels on all gas stoves sold in California, AB 2513 will help families make safer choices and reduce exposure to these harmful pollutants.

Our lobbying effort was impactful, but we still need your support. Sign our petition to ensure AB 2513 becomes law and that Californians are informed about the health risks associated with gas stoves.
