CALPIRG testifies against risky nuclear power plant extension

Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant

On Thursday, CALPIRG State Director Jenn Engstrom testified to the California State Senate Committee on Energy, Utilities, and Communications in opposition to a proposed extension of California’s last nuclear power plant. The Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant is supposed to close in 2025, but a new proposal would put taxpayers and utility ratepayers on the hook for extending operation of the aging plant another five to ten years.

Here are her comments:

“CALPIRG is opposed to the extension of the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant. California has made good progress in energy efficiency and in building clean reliable power sources. We should double down on clean, renewable energy and storage that supports grid reliability, rather than relying on an aging, inflexible nuclear power plant.”
