CALPIRG Students 2023 Lobby Day in Sacramento

On March 6th, fifty college students with CALPIRG Students chapters across the state went to Sacramento for our annual Student Lobby Day.

Students met with state legislators and their staff about increasing ocean protections, right to repair reforms, and legislation to ban bee-killing pesticides, increase solar power and electric school buses in the state, and improve textbook price transparency.

Over the past few months, CALPIRG Student leaders have been educating their peers and engaging their campus community in a campaign to expand Marine Protected Areas in the state.

The Pacific Ocean is a critical part of California’s identity, heritage and economy. California has shown leadership in protecting our oceans by maintaining a statewide network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Still, our coastline and its amazing biodiversity is under threat from extractive and destructive practices including impacts from fishing and oil drilling.

That’s why CALPIRG Students gathered thousands of signatures and public comments in support of expanding Marine Protected Areas and during the Student Lobby Day met with state leaders about why they care about protecting our ocean.
