Sacramento, Calif. — Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Wednesday that California school employees must receive a vaccination against COVID-19 or submit to a weekly test proving they are not infected with the virus.

California will become the first state in the nation to implement such a requirement.

In response, CALPIRG State Director Jenn Engstrom issued the following statement:

“The COVID-19 pandemic is far from over. With the spread of the Delta variant, infections and hospitalizations are increasing in California. It’s no wonder that many parents are nervous to send their children back to in-person schooling.  Vaccinations are our best defense against the pandemic. Governor Newsom is making the right move to ensure the safety of our teachers and children as the school begins this fall.”
