CALPIRG aims to move California beyond plastic, one home at a time

After a long pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CALPIRG has relaunched our canvassing program with a focus on moving California beyond plastic.

In compliance with public health guidelines, CALPIRG canvassers this summer began going door-to-door to educate the public and gather support for plastic waste reduction legislation. Several such bills are under consideration this year and one proposal has qualified for the 2022 ballot.

“The plastics industry has repeatedly funded efforts to defeat the California Plastic Pollution Reduction Act,” said CALPIRG State Director Jenn Engstrom. “That’s why we’re building grassroots support to convince state leaders that now is the time for major reforms to reduce plastic pollution. If enough of their constituents call for action, we can win.”

CALPIRG is canvassing citizen support for reforms to limit the availability of single-use plastics in the state and require that all packaging be recyclable or compostable by 2030.
