Every year, America produces a staggering 42 million metric tons of plastic waste.

PIRG is working to fix that — and we need your help.

For decades, supporters like you have fueled our work to tackle concrete problems and find practical solutions to real problems. Now, as this year comes to a close and we look ahead to the opportunities for progress that 2023 has in store, we’re counting on that same grassroots support to move more of our country beyond wasteful single-use plastic in the months ahead.

Corporations and institutions need to step up on reducing plastic waste

If you’ve tried to go shopping without bringing home a pile of unnecessary plastic packaging, or if you’ve bought something online this holiday season, you know that it’s just about impossible to avoid plastic waste.

And here’s the thing: Just 20 companies are responsible for producing over half of all single-use plastic in the world.

It’s time for companies to take responsibility for the waste that their products are designed to become and for retailers to get rid of unnecessary plastic packaging. It’s time to move beyond plastic.

With your help, here’s how we’re going to get it done

Together with our supporters, we are:

  • Working to ban some of the worst single-use plastics at the state level, and to hold companies responsible for the waste their products are designed to become.
  • Calling on major retailers, including Whole Foods, Costco and Amazon, to get rid of unnecessary single-use plastic packaging. Earlier this year, we helped convince Coca-Cola to commit to an important first step in reducing its plastic waste.
  • Building support for federal action to tackle the plastic waste crisis, including the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act. After PIRG and our allies mobilized activists to send tens of thousands of messages to decision makers, the Biden administration committed to important first steps to phase single-use plastic out of our national parks.

We’re standing up to powerful interests, but we need your support to make it possible. We don’t accept a penny from corporations; our work is fueled by grassroots supporters like you.

We’re ready to move beyond plastic in 2023. Are you with us? Make your special year-end gift before the deadline on Dec. 31 to help win a future free of plastic pollution.
