Senators Sheehy and Warren announce plans to introduce a bipartisan military Right to Repair bill

Mercy deployed in support of the nation's COVID-19 response efforts, and serves as a referral hospital for non-COVID-19 patients currently admitted to shore-based hospitals. This allows shore base hospitals to focus their efforts on COVID-19 cases. One of the Department of Defense's missions is Defense Support of Civil Authorities. Take Action

In an op-ed on Fox News Digital published today, Senators Sheehy (R-Mont.) and Warren (D.-Mass) announced their plan to push a new military Right to Repair bill to reform the military’s outdated procurement process. As the Senators note, the current process forces the military to rely on contractors to repair weapons systems and equipment and leads “to three critical problems: readiness, cost and lack of competition.”

U.S. PIRG applauds this significant bipartisan step forward that follows a recently announced Army policy to include Right to Repair provisions in future Army procurement contracts. During our years of advocacy for a military Right to Repair, we have detailed how contractor repair restrictions impede military readiness and result in spiraling costs for taxpayers. Worse, our interviews with former servicemembers have revealed that these restrictions also put servicemembers lives at risk.

Not surprisingly, a recent bipartisan and nationally representative poll of likely 2026 general election voters PIRG commissioned from Lake Research Partners and The Tarrance Group showed that voters overwhelmingly support Congress passing a law ensuring the U.S. military can repair its own equipment. The support was strongly bipartisan, with 78% of Republicans and 73% of Democrats supporting Congressional action.

Reforms to ensure our military has everything it needs to repair its own weapons and equipment are common sense, broadly popular and long overdue. We call on all members of Congress to support this forthcoming bipartisan legislation.

Current or former servicemembers who want to express their support can add their name to this letter which will be delivered to Congress.
