Benefits & Training

Vacation, Sick Days and Holidays
New staff earn two weeks of paid vacation after their eleventh month on staff. Staff in their second year accrue three weeks of vacation, and staff in their third year and above earn four weeks of vacation annually. The state PIRGs also offer our staff paid holidays and sick days each year.

Educational Loan Assistance
The state PIRGs offer a program to help staff offset the cost of their educational loans. The plan is designed to make public interest jobs viable for everyone, even those with hefty loan burdens. Staff who make a one-year commitment to a professional position with a fixed annual salary are eligible to apply for loan assistance which could take effect once they’ve been on salary for three months.

Health Care Coverage
Campus organizers, fellows, administrators and other entry-level staff may opt into the state PIRGs’ group health insurance plan via pre-tax monthly salary deferrals. For other positions and experience levels, refer to the specific job listing for more details on health care coverage.

Retirement Savings
To allow all staff to work for the public interest in the long term, we provide a 401(k) retirement plan. All staff who are at least 21 years old are eligible to participate after their first year.

Salary
Please reference the relevant job description for salary information.

Other Benefits
In addition to parental leave, the state PIRGs offer a dependent care assistance program, which allows employees to set up pre-tax monthly salary deferrals to pay for eligible dependent care expenses. After two years, staff join the PIRGs’ Long-term Disability Insurance policy.

Training
Training leaders is a key part of the state PIRG mission. Depending on the position, new staff attend one to four national trainings in their first year, learning and honing the skills needed to get press attention for an issue, build coalitions from scratch, organize a campaign from the ground up, raise funds, and manage volunteers, staff or an organization of their own.

The state PIRGs’ training programs include:

• Campus organizers, fellows, administrators and other entry-level staff begin with an initial paid training program that includes hands-on field work, skills workshops and classroom lectures. We hold national, new-hire trainings throughout the year in our Boston office. Campus organizers and fellows also convene for national trainings in late July (campus organizers), mid-August (fellows), October (fellows), January (campus organizers), February (fellows) and April (both).

• All staff benefit from ongoing, on-the-job training with our experienced organizers, lobbyists, fundraisers and other staff directors. Staff work closely with their supervisors throughout the year to hone advanced skills in organizing, campaign management, fundraising, or other responsibilities.

• All staff benefit from the opportunity to participate in national and regional meetings, conferences and trainings throughout the year. For many of these events, we bring together senior management staff; state PIRG organizers, issue experts and other staff; and student and citizen volunteers to focus on campaign strategies and techniques.
